Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) filed a bill in the House of Representatives to strengthen the Constitution’s removal procedures for the President, assuaging concerns about Trump’s dangerous and erratic behavior.

Blumenauer’s bill would “empower former presidents and vice presidents of both parties, in coordination with the sitting vice president, to determine if a president is fit for office.”

His proposed bill mitigates concerns that the 25th Amendment, which deals with succession to the Presidency, does not do enough to address concerns of emotional or mental incapacity in the Office of the Presidency.

Per the bill, “[i]n the event that a president refused to step down, two-thirds of both the House and Senate would have to vote to force the resignation.”

Trump’s shaky relationship with the truth has been cause for alarm among numerous representatives in Congress. Among Trump’s many erroneous claims are that former President Obama wiretapped his office in Trump Tower and that three to five million undocumented immigrants voted illegally in the 2016 Presidential election.

In a statement, Blumenauer said:

“It is hard to imagine a better group to work with the vice president to examine whether the president is able to discharge the duties of the office. When there are questions about the president’s ability to fulfill his or her constitutional responsibilities, it is in the country’s best interest to have a mechanism in place that works effectively.”

The fact that a bill like this has even been introduced in Congress is an embarrassment to Trump and, more importantly, to the office he holds. And yet, as he continues to prove that he is emotionally and mentally unfit to serve as President, the more the passage of this bill seems necessary.
